Twitter Guide Book, I could have needed this

Twitter is a social network used by millions of people, and thousands more are signing up every day to send short messages to groups of friends. But where's the user manual for Twitter? Where do new Twitter users go to learn about Tweeting, retweets, hashtags and customizing your Twitter profile? Where do you go if you want to know all about building a community on Twitter, or using Twitter for business? How can you find advanced tools for using Twitter on your phone or your desktop? To answer all these questions and more, we've assembled The Twitter Guide Book, a complete collection of resources for mastering Twitter. Happy Tweeting!

This would have come very handy during the very first days of twittering. Oh, those were the days...

Twitter has to be one of the very few services that actually doesn't try to teach people how to use their service. The secrets of #hashtags and RT's just have to be learned. So thanks to Mashable for this Twitter Guide Book!

I must be getting old

Rest in peace, MJ. I was trying to think why did this piece of news hit me so much, as I've never really been a fan of Michal Jackson. Then I figured out that it must just be a fact that if my childhood and teenage era's idols are dying, I must be getting old.

Facebook antaa Obaman virkaanastujaisista tutun chatin kaikkien käyttöön

President Obama’s inauguration was a huge event online. Much of the traffic went to CNN, and specifically to its integration with Facebook to provide live chat side-by-side with streaming video.

Essentially, the feature let you login with your Facebook credentials and broadcast your chat messages as status updates. Since then, the feature has been used in other big events, for example, the NBA All-Star Game and by pop trio The Jonas Brothers.

Starting today, however, the feature is available to any website as a copy and paste widget. In other words, you can now enable an experience just like you’ve seen at major events side-by-side with your own content and live video streams.

Kollektiivinen television katselu on yksi asia, jonka nousuun uskon. Olipa käyttämäsi palvelu sitten Facebook, Twitter tai meillä YLEllä käytössä ollut oma Katsomo, yhdessä laajan katseluporukan kanssa jaetut hetket tekevät perinteisistä tv-tapahtumista aiempaa ikimuistoisempia.

Itse olen kokenut netissä ainakin Euroviisut, vaali-iltoja, jääkiekon MM-kisat ja Hittimittarin yhdessä ystävieni kanssa. Jokainen omalla sohvalla, jakaen omat ajatukset ja huomiot.

Uskon, että mitä enemmän mediankäyttö pirstoutuu, sitä enemmän me haluamme kollektiivisia kokemuksia edes aina silloin tällöin. Kiitos Facebookin, se onnistuu nyt kaikilta TV-yhtiöiltä!

professional content producers need to find a way to work with, not against amateur producers

Rather than belittle so-called citizen journalists, professional content producers need to find a way to work with, not against amateur producers. I think there are several ways to do this:

  1. Curation — The biggest problem with citizen journalism is not that no one will report for free, but rather that so many people are willing to report on the world around them. There simply is a glut of information. Professional curation suddenly becomes a valuable commodity. Is Andrew Sullivan reporting live from Iran? No, but he is providing excellent curation of what is happening over there. There is a real need for knowledgeable and patient people to sift through all of this citizen media and pick out the best of it.
  2. Analysis — Citizen journalism is all about micro details, but it’s poor at providing a macro view of a situation. Professional journalists are in a much better position to look at citizen journalism from above, combine what they see there from professional reports and provide macro analysis.
  3. Trends — Citizen journalism is much better at providing the details of crime in a neighborhood , but citizen journalism isn’t very good at identifying trends in data. Citizen journalists can provide the on-the-ground details (with help from pros from time to time), while professional journalists spend most of their time identifying trends.

Perinteisessä mediassa näkee paljon vielä vastakkainasettelua kansalaisjournalismin ja perinteisen journalismin kesken. Milloin toinen uhkaa toista, ja milloin toinen on toistaan parempaa.

Clay Shirky muistuttaa, ettei näitä tarvitse asetella vastakkain.

When Does a Social Media Policy Go Too Far? Ask the AP

Here are the two policies, taken directly out of the AP’s social networking guidelines:

“Q. Anything specific to Facebook?

It’s a good idea to monitor your profile page to make sure material posted by others doesn’t violate AP standards; any such material should be deleted. Also, managers should not issue friend requests to subordinates, since that could be awkward for employees. It’s fine if employees want to initiate the friend process with their bosses.”

So I should take responsibility of the actions of my friends in Facebook - or then get rid of my friends?

Thank God I don't work at AP!

Rikokset kartalla

Datan visualisointi on aihepiiri, jota toivoisin suomalaisenkin median hyödyntävän aiempaa enemmän. Ainakin itse olen ihmisenä sellainen, etten jaksa suuria lukumääriä sisältäviä uutisjuttuja, mutta annas olla kun sama asia on esitetty visuaalisesti!

Twitter's long sleepy tail - BusinessWeek

First, a few numbers. There are some 9 million blogs out there, with 40,000 new ones popping up each day. Some discuss poetry, others constitutional law. And, yes, many are plain silly. “Mommy tells me it may rain today. Oh Yucky Dee Doo,” reads one April Posting. Let’s assume that 99.9% are equally off point. So what? That leaves some 40 new ones every day that could be talking about your business, engaging your employees, or leaking those merger discussions you thought were hush-hush.

Ja tähän päälle vielä, että toisen hömppä on toisen asia, lainatakseni kolleegaani.
